P1010463Certified Fire Investigator Information

In 1986, the IAAI resolved a national concern by developing the Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) Program.  The CFI Program is an established procedure for identifying and recognizing a fire investigator’s expertise.  You do not have to belong to the IAAI to become certified.

Certification is based upon:

a.  Attaining at least 150 points from your education, training, and experience.
b. Passing a comprehensive examination.

Before you are allowed to take the examination, your application must be approved by review committees.  You must be able to document every point claimed on the application.  Certificates, diplomas, testament letters and transcripts are examples of acceptable documentation.  Once your application is approved, you will be sent examination date and locate alternatives.

Application fee: $150.00 for IAAI members        $250.00 for nonmember

There are currently over 800 Certified Fire Investigators across the world.  For a breakdown of the points allowed, you can download the CFI Manual.  We have also have available the CFI application and CFI Recertification application if you are interested.  Both the brochure and the application can be downloaded here in adobe acrobat format.  For more information on the CFI Program, please visit the International Association of Arson Investigators website at www.firearson.com, or contact the IAAI-CFI Headquarters Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm EST, 800-468-IAAI (4224) or 410-451-FIRE (3473)
